The Beginning...

Big L was born Lamont Coleman on May 20th 1974, in Haarlem New York City. From the age of 12 Big L became a rap fanatic. He practised the artform of rapping on Lennox Avenue with the likes of Mace (Bad Boy recording artiste and prodigy of P.Diddy) and Kamron. Big L soon became known for the way he delivered classic punchlines as he battled other street rappers. In 1990 Big L was in a rap act named 3 The Hardway. When group member Rodney left 3 The Hardway, the name of the group changed its name to, Two Hard MotherFuckers.

Big L met Lord Finesses at an qautograph session in a record shop in New York. Lord Finesse was impressed with the talent Big L had in his rapping skills so exchanged telephone numbers, leading Lord Finesse to take Big L under his wing. Big L became a member of The D.I.T.C. crew. Diggin In The Crates saw Big L work with Lord Finesse, Show and AG. , Fat Joe and Big Punisher. His debut single, The Devil`s Child , was released in 1993. Big L became a hot name amongst the underground rappers of New York which led him to sign with Colombia Records in 1995. An album entitled Lifestylez Ov Da Poor and Dangerous was released by Columbia Records.

A single named Eubonics released...

A single named Eubonics was also released by Big L but his stay with Columbia Records was brief. In 1997 Big L released his second studio album entitled, The Big Picture.

Big L was soon signed up as a recording artiste with The Diggin In The Crates Crew. (D.I.T.C.)Big L began to make a big impact on the streets of New York with the quality and wordplay of his raps. Big L soon gained a reputation as being the best rap artiste not to have signed to a major record label

In early 1999 Big L was on the verge of signing a five hundred million dollar record deal with Rocafella records. Jay Z had already began opening negotiations with Big L and Damon Dash. Alongside Herb McGruff there were plans for Big L to be part of a group known as The Wolfpack.

Big L - the best rapper of all time...

Unfortunately Big L was shot down and murdered before the new recording contract could be finalised. Big L was only 26 years of age when he died on February 15th 1999.

Some people within the music business rated Big L so highly that they called him the best rapper of all time. People that knew him were drawn to his charasmatic personality and the way he could deliver a devastating punchline every time he rapped.

In 1997 Big L came to the U.K. for his one and only U.K. concert appearance alongside O.C. at London`s Subterrania Club. Fortunately this concert was filmed and footage of this concert has never been broadcast. The full concert is now available to be seen so the general public can get the chance to witness the skills of one of the best rap artistes of all time. The world now has the chance to watch Big L in concert.
